Austria's delegation was led by its prime minister, Renner, a cheerful, portly man, fond of good food and drink, card games and dancing. He was a moderate socialist and a realist.22 When he left for Paris, crowds at the railway station shouted, 'Bring us a good peace'. Renner replied, 'count on me to obtain all that is humanly possible for the good of our dear people. But we mustn't forget that our unhappy country did not win the victory, and we beg you not to nourish mad hopes.'23 Along with his experts, he took a distinguished pacifist, a journalist who had friends in Paris from before the war, including Clemenceau, and a genuine British hero. Rudolf Slatin had been with General Gordon in the disastrous expedition in the Sudan, was held prisoner by the Mahdi for years and then freed by Kitchener and given a knighthood. Slatin Pasha, as the British remembered him, wrote to his old friend Balfour, asking for Austria's delegates to be allowed to negotiate face to face with the peacemakers. Balfour regretted that it could not be done, but used Slatin as an unofficial means of communication. 24

When his train arrived in Paris, Renner apologized, in French, for not speaking that language. He said how pleased he was to be visiting Paris for the first time. He smiled obligingly for the press.  Another of his party managed a quite dig when he was asked about the train journey through the battlefields; 'Someone had the forethought to slow the passage of our train so that we could the better see France looking so lovely in this jolly month of May.'25 The Austrians behaved impeccably even when they were obliged to wait patiently for their terms because the Council of Four, which had summoned them in a burst of enthusiasm, as promptly forgot them. The Austrians played cards, read and went for long walks. 'We got good French food and wines,' recalled one, 'which most of us enjoyed after the long hungry years.' When it could be arranged, their Allied guards took them out for little expeditions. Renner, the son of farmers, asked especially to see a French agricultural college. The Austrians made a good impression , quite unlike, everyone sad, the Germans, who had also arrived in Paris. In St German the locals were particularly fond of a delegate from the Tyrol, in his chestnut hunting jacket and little green hat with its large black feather. They did not realize that he was wearing mourning because the largely German-speaking southern part of the Tyrol had already been awarded to Italy.26

كان وفد النمسا تحت قيادة رئيسِ وزرائه، رينير،  بهيج ، رجل ضخم، مولع بالطعام والشراب الجيد وألعاب الورق  والرقص.  كَان إشتراكي معتدل وواقعي. 22 عندما تَوجهَ إلى باريس، صاح المحتشدين في محطة سكة الحديد   ’أجلب لنا سلام جيد‘. أجاب  رينير ،  ’أعتمد علي  للحُصول على كل ما يعتبر لمصلحة الانسانية و مصلحة شعبنا الاعزاء.  لَكنَّنا لا يَجِبُ أنْ نَنْسي بأنّ بلادَنا الحزينةَ لَمْ تنال النصر،  ونحن نتوسل اليك أَنْ لا ترعي آمالَ مجنونةَ.‘ 23  سويّة مع خبرائه، أَخذَ معه السلمي البارز، والصحفي الذي كَانَ لديه اصدقاء في باريس مِنْ قبل الحرب،  ويشمل ذلك كلمنزو،  والبطل البريطاني ألاصيل،  رودولف سلاتن Slatin كَانَ مع الجنرالِ جوردن في البعثةِ الكارثية في السودان،   إحتجز سجينَا من قِبل المهدي لسَنَوات وبعد ذلك حرر مِن قِبل  كيتتشنر Kitchener وحصل علي وسام الفروسية. سلاتن سلاطن Slatin، كما يتذركره البريطانيون، كَتب إلى صديقه القديمِ بلفور،  يَسْأل عن مندوبي النمسا للسماح لهم  التفاوض  وجهاً لوجه مَع صانعي السلام.  وتأسف بلفور لعدم قدرته بذلك، لكنه استخدم  سلاطن Slatin كوسيلة للاتصالات غير رسمية  . 24

عندما وصل قطاره إلى باريس،  اعتذر رينير،  في اللغة الفرنسيه، لعدم استخدامة تلك اللغة.  قال كم هو سعيدا لزيارته الي باريس للمرة الأولى.  إبتسمَ بِلطف للصحافة.  شخص أخر من  حزبِه استطاع ان يهمزه بهدوء عندما سئل عن سفرة في  القطار خلال ساحاتِ المعركة؛ ' قام شخص بمبادرة لابطاء  سير قطارِنا لكي نتمكن من رؤية فرنسا تبدو رائعة هذا الشهرِ الممتع من مايو/مايس‘. 25  تصرف النمساويين  بشكل منزّه حتى عندما الزموا أن ينتظروا بفارغ الصبر لشروطِهم لأن مجلسَ ألاربعة، التي أستدعتهم في اندفاع حماسي،  تناسوا وجودهم  فوراً.  لَعبَ النمساويون الورق، قَرأوا وساروا علي اقدامهم علي مسافات طويلة . ’أكلنا الغذاء والنبيذِ الفرنسيِ الفاخر‘ ، قال أحدهم، ’ مما تمتع معظمنا بعد السَنَوات الطويلة من الجوع .’  عندما كان بالامكان وجود أي فرصه ،  أخذوهم حراس التحالف للبعثات الصَغيرة.  رينير، إبن  الفلاح ، سَأل بشكل خاص  لرُؤية كلية الزراعية الفرنسية.  أحدث النمساويون  إنطباع جيد،  تماماً على خلاف، كما قال  كُل شخص أخر، الألمان، الذين وَصلوا إلى باريس أيضاً.  في سنت جيرمين ، كان الناس المحليون بشكل خاص مولعون بوفود من تيرول  Tyrol،   في سترته الصيادية  الكستنائية وقبعته الخضراء إلى حدٍّ ما بريشتها السوداءِ الكبيرة.  لم يدركوا بأنّه كَانَ يَلْبسُ ثوب الحداد لأن الجزءَ الجنوبيَ الناطق بالألمانيةَ بشكل كبير من تيرول Tyrol تم منحها إلى إيطاليا. 26
