Being a member of the United States Congress is hard work. It’s a long and expensive road as you campaign in order to get the actual seat, and by the time you do get there, many realize that gettng things done—especially in the last couple of years—isn’t as easy as it looks.
It is, however, a lot easier to get around on Capitol Hill if money isn’t much of an issue. Sure, people would like to think that if you want to affect political change and serve your country in America, it shouldn’t matter how much you have in the bank. That’s all part of the American Dream, after all. But between campaigning and trying to scrape by on more than the government-issued $174,000 salary (which politicians have said still isn’t enough to make ends meet in Congress), you need all the financial cushioning you can get.
Using the most recent data from the Center for Responsive Politics (2013), InsideGov found and ranked the 21 richest members of Congress based on their net worth in 2013. The data is also based off personal financial disclosures submitted that year by the members of Congress themselves. We also included the congressperson’s percent change in net worth from 2012 to 2013, if the data was available.
