The United States was represented at Sunday's rally in Paris by Ambassador to France Jane Hartley. Attorney General Eric Holder and Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas are in Paris for meetings with French officials on security issues.
The White House had no official comment on President Obama's absence. Since the attacks on the magazine Charlie Hebdo and the kosher supermarket, Obama has called French President Francois Hollande to pledge U.S. help and solidarity, and he visited the French Embassy in Washington to sign a note to the French people.
