The Functions of Parties;
Serving as Intermediaries
Wherever free elections have been conducted on a continuing basis at the national or regional level, political parties exist. This basic fact is suggestive of the fundamental role of parties in a democratic society. They are intermediary or linkage mechanisms between the mass of the citizenry and their government. Parties function as institutions to bring scattered elements of the public together, to define objectives, and to work collectively to achieve those objectives through government policy. Parties, therefore, are involved in aggregating societal interests, recruiting leadership, compromising competing demands, contesting elections, and seeking to organize governments.
