The US media purposefully turn a blind eye to the suffering of the people in Bahrain, a human rights activist tells Press TV.
In an interview on Thursday, Edward Corrigan said the mainstream media blackout on the human rights violations in Bahrain shows that the US political officials “do not want to focus on problems in Bahrain, where you have a majority population that’s Shia, [and] that’s been religiously persecuted and discriminated against for years.”He added that the US overlooks breach of human rights by the Al Khalifa regime as Manama is a faithful and subservient ally of Washington.
“It’s not convenient to focus on the human rights problems of allied states. Bahrain is also the site of a major American naval base. It’s considered an ally of the United States, which means it’s easy to control and does what it (the US) says,” the analyst stated.Bahrainis have been staging demonstrations since mid-February 2011, calling for political reforms and a constitutional monarchy. Their demand later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the ruling Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.
