Today in the Guardian, almost 1,000 health professionals from around the world have come together to ask the Wellcome Trust to move their money out of fossil fuel companies on ethical grounds. They have signed a letter calling on the multi-billion pound health charity to divest from fossil fuels in the name of one of the most fundamental principles of medical ethics: "do no harm."
The Wellcome Trust says it is "dedicated to improving health by supporting bright minds in science, the humanities and social sciences, and public engagement" – so a call by hundreds of minds in the health profession could have the biggest impact of all.
Signatories include some of the most senior people in the profession – including the editors of the British Medical Journal and the Lancet.

The Guardian has made efforts to verify all the signatories. Many of them have told us why they see climate change as a health issue, pointing to extreme weather disasters, increased disease and mental health.
Chris Bird, a biomedical scientist in the UK: "I have worked in the National Health Service for 30 years to improve people's lives. Climate change will negate my life's work".
Judith Whitworth, former chief medical officer of Australia: "Global warming is THE major problem facing the planet. Climate change is most important of all health issues for multiple reasons: heat stress, spread of infectious diseases, population dislocation, increased famine, water shortage, extreme weather events, and potential conflicts."
