Hardline Iranian editor: Khamenei opposed to nuclear deal

TEHRAN, Iran — Well-known Iranian hardliner Hossein Shariatmadari, the managing editor of the Kayhan newspaper, in a Saturday editorial piece analyzed Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s earlier speech about the recently signed landmark nuclear deal, and said Khamenei was dissatisfied with the agreement.
 
Although the Iranian supreme leader has never disapproved the landmark nuclear deal explicitly, in his speech he stressed that Iran would not change its foreign policy regardless of whether the deal was approved or not.  
 
“Whether this deal is ratified or not, we will not stop helping our friends in the region,” Khamenei said during his Eid al-Fitr speech. “We will continue to aid the people of Palestine, Yemen, Syria, Bahrain and the fighters of Lebanon.”
 
Shariatmadari concluded Khamenei opposes the deal. He added that the ayatollah in his speech implied that some parts of the deal are threats to fundamental principles of the Islamic revolution.  
 
He went on to write that the only way to thwart the threats posed by the nuclear deal is a “no” vote against the deal in the country’s parliament.   
 
Iranian lawmakers and the National Security Council, the country’s top decision-making body, will soon gather to talk about the nuclear deal and vote on its implementation.
