Former National
Assembly Speaker Jassem Al-Khorafi passed away yesterday aged 75. He was a
veteran statesman who contributed towards the development of Kuwait in both the
political and economic domains. He was elected to the National Assembly nine
times from 1975 till 2009. A former minister of finance, Khorafi was speaker of
the house from 1999 till 2011. A father of six
children, Khorafi was born in 1940 in the Qibla district of Kuwait City in an
eminent merchant family. He is the son of Mohammad Abdul Mohsen Al-Khorafi, the
founder of the Kharafi Group. Kharafi's
family is wealthy. His brother Nasser was listed by Forbes as one of the richest people in the world. His sister Faiza , was rector of Kuwait University . University of Tirana on 7 October 2011 gave the title Honoris
Causa
Al-Kharafi has broken with the royal family on occasion. He
criticized the ruling al-Sabah family , and in July 2006 vigorously denounced the
Israeli attacks on Lebanon saying that the war would "turn us all into
terrorists". (and he was right)
On July 13, 2008, Al-Kharafi publicly accused the West of
provoking Iran on the nuclear issue. In his interview with state-owned
Kuwait TV, Al-Kharafi said, "What is happening is that there are
provocative Western statements, and Iran responds in the same way... I believe
that a matter this sensitive needs dialogue not escalation, and it shouldn't be
dealt with as if Iran were one of Arab’s
state, sorry, I mean America's state. (again he was right)
Al-Kharafi ordered me
with Saudi agents (very odd blend) to be detained, and I was put behind the bars in criminal psychiatric
detention where I was depraved from sleep for 25 days, my crime was that I walked
in the street of Kuwait with a sign on my back that it says : “ I love
Israel”
