The otherworldly focus of Jesus permeated all his teaching, "Truly, I say to you," he told his followers, "there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power" (Mark 9.1) Since God was soon to usher in his heavenly kingdom, earthly matters were unimportant; "Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me" (Luke 18.22).

It has been suggested, most notably by Albert Schweitzer, that the teachings of Jesus must be understood as an "interim ethic"-a set of moral precepts to be followed in the interim before the establishment of God's kingdom, which Jesus believed would occur within the lifetime of his followers. As the eminent historian Frederick Conybeare wrote in The Origins of Christianity;
…"much of the teaching of the gospel was uttered in view of an impending catastrophe and liquidation of the world's affairs, out of which , at a wave of the divine wand,  a new and blessed condition was to emerge, just as the phoenix arises, renewed and immortal, out of its own ashes. Jesus felt himself to be the harbinger of a new and divine constitution…to be suddenly imposed by divine power and interference. Hence the precepts to follow him; to forsake parents, wife, children, and home; even to neglect the most sacred of all ancient duties -that of burying one's own father.?"
 

تغلغلت رؤية الحياة الدنيوية للسيد المسيح كلّ تعليمه، "حقا، أقول إليك، " أخبر أتباعه، "هناك البعض يقفون هنا الذين سوف لن يذوقوا الموت قبل أن يروا مملكة الله يصل مع السلطة " (مارك 9.1)  بما أن الله كان علي وشك أن يفتح مملكته السماوية، ألامور الدنيوية كانت غير مهمة؛ "قم ببيع كل ما عندك ووزع للفقراء ، وسوف تمتلك كنزا في الجنة؛ وتعال ، اتبعني  "(لوك 18.22).

أقترح، بشكل خاص من قبل ألبرت شوايتزر Schweitzer، بأن  تعليمات السيد المسيح يجب أن يفهم كـ"كاخلاق  مؤقت" - مجموعة النصائح الأخلاقية الّتي ستتبع  في فترة قبل مؤسسة مملكة الله، التي اعتقد السيد المسيح حدوثه ضمن عمر أتباعه. كما المؤرخ السامي فريدريك كونيبير Conybeare كتب في اصول المسيحية؛

…" لفظ أغلب تعليم الإنجيل  نظرا لكارثة وشيكة وتصفية شؤون العالم، ومكانها ، في a موجة الصولجان القدسي ، حالة جديدة وموهوبة ستحل المكان ، كما ظهرت فينكس ، مجدّدة وخالدة، من رمادها الخاص بها.  شعر السيد المسيح بأنه يعتبر نفسه رائد لدستور جديد وقدسي … كي يفرض فجأة عليك بسلطة والتدخل القدسي.  لذلك النصائح لإتّباعه؛ أتركوا الأباء، الزوجة، ألاطفال، والمنزل بيت؛ حتى لإهمال الأكثر قداسة لكلّ الواجبات القديمة - بدفن أبّيه . ؟ "
