Providing Public Accountability
Democratic governments derive their powers from the people. Fred 1. Greenstein, therefore, has suggested a simple and workable definition of democracy as a political system in which "citizens have a relatively high degree of control over their leaders."12 Parties provide voters with a means to hold public officials accountable for the actions of government. They, therefore, make a contribution to citizen control of government.
The contemporary political world is incredibly complex. The array of issues and candidates upon which the model citizen should he informed in a general election is almost mind-boggling. Political power in the United States is divided among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches and among nations, state, and local governments. The voter, therefore, is expected to make informed choices for officials at all levels and in several branches of government. There are choices for offices from the president to county registrar of deeds, and issues form U.S.-Russia relations to the administration of county courts. Fortunately, the voter can respond to these tangled questions in terms of a few simple criteria and is not required to spend all available time studying politics.

إنّ العالم السياسي المعاصر معقّد جدا. صفّ القضايا والمرشّحين على أي مواطن نموذجي يجب أن يعلم في الانتخابات العامة عموما يعتبر جفل عقل. السلطة السياسية في الولايات المتّحدة منقسمة بين أفرع السلطة التشريعية ،التنفيذيه، والقضائية وكذلك بين الوطن ، الولايه ، والحكومات المحلية. إنّ الناخب، لذا، يتوقّع منه فعل إختيارات مطّلعة للمسؤولين على كل المستويات وفي عدّة فروع الحكومة. هناك إختيارات للمناصب من الرئيس إلى مسجّل دفاتر المقاطعة، وقضايا ذو علاقات بين روسيا وامريكا إلى إدارة محاكم المقاطعة . لحسن الحظ، الناخب يمكن أن يردّ على هذه الأسئلة المتشابكة ببضعة معايير بسيطة ولا يتطلب منه القضاء كلّ الوقت المتوفر لديه للامعان بالسياسة.
