"For the most part, the Muslim response to this victim-blaming, slut-shaming, rape-culture promoting video by Metwaly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgw6y3cH7tA) has been to hail it as proof that the hijab ‘protects’ women. This is the sad reality for many Muslim women, who often participate in their own oppression at the hands of patriarchy. That is how I was raised: to think of women who don’t cover up enough as pieces of meat who were responsible for the unwanted male harassment they may receive. The modesty doctrine as preached by Islamic sources is usually tied to the Quranic verse 33:59."
