If nothing else, Lewis provides us with a insight into the Christian idea of sympathy; and, to his credit, Lewis does accomplish one of his goals. He illustrates quite vividly, even if unintentionally, a primary cause of human suffering; the idea of sin itself. Lewis has the candor to admit what other Christians prefer to ignore; that Christianity thrives on guilt . Guilt, not love, is the fundamental emotion that Christianity seeks to induce-and this is symptomatic of a viciousness in Christianity that few people care to acknowledge. For all of its alleged concern for the "poor in spirit," Christianity does its best to perpetuate spiritual impoverishment.

In Summary, religious morality may be described as the denaturalization of values. It divorces the pursuit of values from their natural consequences and relies instead on sanctions, both physical and psychological, to motivate obedience to its moral rules. In Christianity, hell is the most prominent physical sanction; and sin, the psychological equivalent of hell, the  most common psychological sanction.

With its emphasis on obedience, enforced through the inculcation of fear and guilt, Christianity has transformed morality into something that is generally considered ominous and distasteful. With its emphasis on punishment and reward in an afterlife, Christianity is largely responsible for the notion that morality is impractical, and has little or nothing to do with man's life and happiness on earth.

The religious concern with obedience, duty and guilt stands in stark contrast to the rational conception of morality, where man is of central concern, where man's life is the standard of value, and where moral principles function for human welfare. Any link between religion and morality is not only unjustified, it is enormously harmful. The religious view of morality is still widely accepted; children are raised by it, and men attempt to live by it-with the result that millions of people practice, in the name of morality, what amounts to emotional and intellectual suicide.

 لا شيء ما عدا ذلك، يزودنا لويس  مع بصيرة للفكر المسيحي للتعاطف ؛ وإلى إئتمانه، لويس ينجز أحد أهدافه. يصوّر تماما بشكل واضح، حتى إذا من غير قصد،  السبب ألاساسي للمعاناة الإنسانية؛ فكرة الخطيئة نفسها.  لدي لويس  الشجاعة  لإعتراف ما يفضله المسيحيين آلاخرين إلى رفضه؛ بأن  المسيحية تزدهر بسبب الذنب . الذنب، وليس الحب، يعتبر  التعاطف الجوهري وتناشده المسيحية لاقناع  - وهذه تعتبر العرضية الوحشيّة في المسيحية و يهتم  القلة من الناس الإعتراف بذلك.  لكل مزاعمه المقلقة "لضعفاء النفوس"  ، تبذل المسيحية الجهد الجهيد لإدامة التفقير الروحي.

في الختام ، المبادئ الأخلاقية الدينية العاجلة قد توصف كانها إزالة الصفات الطبيعية للقيم . تفصل مسعى القيم من نتائجهم الطبيعية وتعتمد بدلا من ذلك على العقوبات، كلاهما جسديه ونفسية، لتحفيز الطاعة إلى قوانين الأخلاقية. في المسيحية، يعتبر الجحيم العقوبه الجسديه الأبرز؛ والخطيئه، المساوي النفسي للجحيم، يعتبر الاكثر شيوعا للعقوبة النفسية .

بتأكيده على الطاعة، فرضت من خلال تلقين الخوف والذنب، حوّلت المسيحية مبادىء ألاخلاقية في شيئا  الذي يعتبر مشؤوم ومقيت عموما.  بتأكيده على العقاب والفوز في الاخره، تعتبر المسيحية بشكل كبير مسؤولة عن الفكرة بأن  المبادىء الأخلاقية تعتبر غير عملية، ولها لا شيء او القليل التي تتعلق بحياة الرجل والسعادة على الأرض.

أهتمام الدين بالطاعة ، والواجب والذنب تقف موقفا عازما ضد المفهوم العقلاني للمبادىء الأخلاقية، حيث أنّ الرجل في مركز الاهتمام ، حيث أنّ حياة الرجل معيار للقيمة، وحيث توظف المبادئ الاخلاقية للرفاهية الإنسانية.  أي علاقة  بين الدين والمبادىء الأخلاقية ليس فقط تعتبر غير مبرّرة، تعتبر كذلك ضارة جدا.  وجهة النظر الدينية للمبادىء الأخلاقية لم تزل تقبل على نحو واسع؛ يتربي الأطفال بواسطته، ويحاول الرجال العيش من خلاله - والنتيجة بأن يمارس الملايين من الناس، بإسم المبادىء الأخلاقية، التي تعتبر بمثابة الإنتحار العاطفي والثقافي.
