RE Bright registration
Hello Robert,
I'd like to personally welcome you to the Brights! Thanks for joining.
Because the “bright” label fits anyone whose outlook on the world is free of supernatural and mystical elements, it covers quite a broad diversity of folks. There are many persons living today who, like you, do not draw on the supernatural for their understanding of the world. We definitely need more such brights in key capacities and roles such as in education and government. This need is true across the globe, not just in the United States, where this Brights’ initiative began and is greatly needed.
Unfortunately, many brights pay abundant attention to religion and “beliefs” but give very little attention to civics and to how pursuing strategies quite unrelated to religion might improve the situation. This “Bright idea” is mostly a consciousness-raising and educational endeavor to draw and urge attention to these matters.
At Brights Central (“BC”), we hope Brights can start to counter the strong societal stigma that exists in so many places against those who have a naturalistic outlook. The Brights movement is asking participating Brights to do what they can within their own spheres of influence (law, education, business, government, etc.) to garner more social acceptance for brights-at-large. That way, you can focus on your own circumstances while staying connected to the broader internet constituency and lending support to the overall initiative.
When communicating with fellow citizens, it can be liberating at times to shed customary religion-related baggage. I think of "a bright" as being an amenable umbrella concept. It’s new and positive (no negative associations). If you like the term for yourself, by all means use it. If you prefer to just identify as having “a naturalistic worldview,” that’s fine too. Self-identity is up to you. The key is that you are participating in the Brights movement for a reason - to advance in some ways the civic aims that are stated on the home page.
In so many nations, the citizens who have this naturalistic worldview are not seen as the moral and civic equals of those who use supernatural explanations. To get more citizens whose thinking is free of supernaturalism accepted and engaged in society, it is necessary to change that situation.
If you are new to this "Bright idea," I hope you will invest some time to acquire a good understanding of what the movement is trying to achieve. When you can do so, please explore the website. There is a special page with links to key material. That page is a handy “launch pad” for your explorations. There’s also a segment of the site for BloggingBrights. Postings there exemplify the concept that persons who have a naturalistic worldview are as principled as any other citizens. (Check out our blog.)
All of our efforts here at The Brights’ Net are wholly funded by personal charitable donations from individuals like yourself. If you’re able to and willing, please consider contributing to our projects by making a one-off donation or signing up for a 6 or 12 month donation subscription on our donation page. Alternatively, if you are an Amazon shopper, you can support the Brights financially that way! Simply start your shopping through our Amazon affiliate portal. Then, every time you purchase, the Brights will receive 6-7% of the purchase price, at no extra cost to you!
Once again, welcome to the constituency of Brights! Thanks again!
